John Wilkes Booth was an American actor and Confederate sympathizer who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865. Following the assassination, a nationwide manhunt was launched for Booth and his accomplices.
Wanted posters of John Wilkes Booth were circulated throughout the country, offering a $100,000 reward for his capture. The posters described Booth as being 5'8" tall, with black hair, a mustache, and a scar on his neck. He was also said to be a skilled horseman and fluent in French.
In addition to the wanted poster, a photograph of John Wilkes Booth was widely distributed to aid in his capture. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, Booth managed to evade capture for 12 days before being tracked down and killed by Union soldiers in a tobacco barn near Port Royal, Virginia on April 26, 1865.
